Plants need showers, too.

You know how refreshing a shower can feel after a long day? Or, for our morning shower-ers, how a shower can really wake you up and get you ready to go? You can, and should, pass that feeling along to your plants!

There are so many benefits to giving your tropical plants a shower. Especially in the dry, Canadian winter, running the shower with warm-ish water gives your plants the humidity they’ve been missing out on for the past few months.

Showering your plants not only allows the soil to become saturated and clear out any pests (make sure your pots have sufficient drainage!), it also gives the leaves a little rinse to clear them of dust. Clean leaves = easier photosynthesis = happier, greener plants.

The easiest way to shower your plants is to load them all up in your bathtub and turn on the water. Let the water run over all your babies and keep it on until you get a little steam. Once you’re sufficiently steamed up, turn the water off and leave your plants to drain off. I usually let them sit for an hour or so before returning them to their homes. I also like to do this on a cleaning day, so that I can give the tub a good scrub down afterward.

I like to shower my plants every few months, but more frequently throughout the colder months when the furnace has been kicking up dust around the house.
